Year 5- Autumn term – Our place in space

Science

Earth and space- Learn about how the solar system  and the relative position of planets, moons and stars. Use their knowledge of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.

Forces- Explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object. Learn about  the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. Recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.

Propeties & Changes of Materials- Compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties. Carry out experiments to test these properities. Understand and give reasons for why particular materials are used to create everyday items.

Computing

Multi-media- Design a futuristic space city using Tinkercad.

E-safety /technology in our lives- Throughout Year 5 there is a regular and sustained focus on staying safe online and using mobile technology- phones and tablets.

Geography

Due to the focus on Science this term the Geography happens in Spring and Summer.
